The School of Electronic Information at Central South University was established in April 2023 through the merger of the Department of Communication Engineering from the former School of Computer Science, the Department of Electronic Science from the former School of Physics and Electronics, and the Department of Electronic Information Engineering from the former School of Automation. It is a key school of the university integrating education, scientific research, and applied R&D in the field of electronic information.
The school is authorized to grant doctoral degrees in the first-level discipline of Information and Communication Engineering, as well as professional doctoral degrees in Electronic Information. It also offers master’s degrees in the first-level discipline of Electronic Science and Technology. It hosts two national first-class undergraduate programs—Communication Engineering and Electronic Information Science and Technology—and one provincial first-class undergraduate program (Hunan Province) in Electronic Information Engineering. Distinctive research directions have been formed, including wireless communication and networks, quantum information processing, rail transit network communication and control, intelligent signal processing, microwave communication and signal regulation, and signal sensing and detection.
The school currently has 82 faculty and staff members, including 25 professors and 31 associate professors. Among them are one overseas academician, one overseas national high-level talent, one expert receiving the State Council Special Allowance, one specially appointed professor under the Hunan Furong Talent Program, one recipient of the Hunan Distinguished Young Scholars Fund, one Huxiang Young Talent, three Hunan Excellent Young Scholars, one “Xiaohe” Science and Technology Talent of Hunan Province, one young talent supported by the China Association for Science and Technology, one young scholar under the Hunan Furong Talent Program, four young backbone teachers of Hunan Province, one provincial teaching expert, and one “Shenghua Elite” talent of Central South University.
The school has a strong foundation in education and teaching, with steadily improving student training quality. It currently has more than 1,300 students, including over 1,000 undergraduates and more than 300 master’s and doctoral students. It has established 9 Hunan Provincial Engineering Research Centers,1 “Double-Leader” Party Branch Secretary Studio in Hunan Province, and 3 joint training bases for top innovative postgraduate talents. It also co-builds anational-level virtual simulation experimental teaching center.
Focusing on the “Double First-Class” initiative, the school aligns with major national needs, serves public health and well-being, promotes interdisciplinary integration, and strengthens innovation platforms and research teams. Over the past five years, it has won one second prize of National Teaching Achievement Awards, two first prizes and one second prize of Hunan Higher Education Teaching Achievement Awards, as well as two first prizes and five second prizes of provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological awards. It has been granted over 200 invention patents, published more than 500 high-quality papers in leading domestic and international journals, undertaken nearly 100 national-level projects (including those funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and national science and technology programs), and completed over 150 provincial, ministerial, and enterprise-commissioned projects. The total research funding has reached nearly 150 million RMB, with over 10 million RMB in technology transfer income.
These achievements have laid a solid foundation for comprehensively improving talent cultivation quality and advancing education in the new era.
